Business Foundation 1 (CLIL)

Students will be required to work in groups and will analyze various business issues, everyday problem situations, and be able to effectively present their conclusions within both oral presentations and written form.

1. Development of a solid business knowledge base concerning modern business concepts, skills and strategies for academic use

4. Development of communication skills (written and oral) with a business context

English for Specific Academic Purpose 1

Module Overview:

ESAP 1 is an introductory course to the fundamentals of English speaking, writing, reading, and listening. This course mainly focuses on teaching English through public speaking, current events, and mock business projects intended to give students hands on experience over theory.

Module Aims:

This module aims to:
1. Teach fundamental introductory presentation skills
2. Learn vocabulary and concepts related to current events and trending topics
3. Learn basic academic writing & business language and skills 

 

Business and Economics Mathematics

Module Overview:

The course offers basic mathematics skills for students in economics and management major. It covers algebraic manipulation, simple calculus, matrices and linear programming.
Topics (or applications) will include supply and demand analysis, national income determination, compound interest, investment appraisal, elasticity and marginal functions.

(1) Provide students with basic mathematics skills in economics and business study.
(2) Enable students to analyze real problems using logical thinking and mathematics tools. 

 

Profile of China

Module Overview:

The course of Profile of China provides basic information of China, showing the students the outline of China. With the help of PPT and some videos, the teacher will illustrate and exemplify the inner world of Chinese people and their perspectives, so that the students will gain a deep understanding of China and Chinese people.  

The course is designed to offer students some information about the essence of China and Chinese culture. Besides, some functional information will be given. For example, the students will learn how to tell the differences of tea and how to appreciate traditional Chinese music and folk music, and so on. This is a course combining theoretical and practical things.

1. Help the students get some basic information about China and Chinese culture.
2. Lay a solid foundation for the students to further study Chinese culture at a higher level.
3. Open a window through which the students can gain a deeper understanding of the true essence of Chinese culture and Chinese society.

Basic Language (Chinese/ English) 1

Module Overview:

This course is for students who never learned Chinese before. The module incorporates all four skills of language learning through a wide variety of activities, with an emphasis on spoken Chinese and vocabulary. Students will also be able to read and write some Chinese characters and able to set out their ideas in simple Chinese. The course focuses on improving listening, speaking, reading and foundational grammar for complex sentence and short paragraph buildup.

1. Provide students with a solid foundation of the basic grammatical structures of the target language thus enabling them to communicate effectively across the four key language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) at an elementary level on a variety of general topics
2. Enable participants to give and understand information and to achieve a confident elementary level of communicative competence in everyday situations
3. Increase student’s vocabulary.

Module Overview:

This module is designed to introduce students to how businesses are structured and how their activities are coordinated in a real world competitive business environment. It is intended to give students a framework of basic business ideas and concepts, which will provide them with a foundation for higher-level studies.
This module will address business concepts in the following areas:

5. Business of Human Resources
6. Marketing
7. Managing Financial Resources 

Business Foundation 1 (CLIL) will cover the first 3 areas and Business Foundation 2 (CLIL) will cover the last 4 ones.

Module Overview:

ESAP 2 is a continuation course in the fundamentals of English speaking, writing, reading, and listening. This course continues to focus on teaching English through public speaking, current events, and mock business projects intended to give students hands on experience over theory. This course builds on the skills taught during ESAP 1 to further develop presentation skills as well as necessary academic language.

1. Give students plenty of opportunities to practice presentation skills.
2. Increase vocabulary and concepts related to current events and trending topics
3. Learn basic academic writing & business language and skills
4. Teach Interview Skills / Work on Career – Development 

TASK

Module Overview:


Known as the Transferrable Academic Skills Kit, or TASK, this course helps students acquire, build and enhance transferrable academic skills, such as structural and critical thinking, problem-solving methods, reading strategies, writing academic essays, techniques for collaborative learning, as well as research methods and digital literacy.   

Module Aims:

1. Students will learn various types of reading strategies, both on an intensive and extensive reading level.
2. Students will learn to distinguish between argumentative and non-argumentative forms of writing.
3. Students will learn to identify the various functions of a paragraph, such as paragraphs that use description, explanations or summaries.
4. Students will adopt a systematic approach to critical thinking: learning how to define an argument, how to reconstruct an argument using standard form and identifying rhetorical ploys and logical fallacies.
5. Students will learn various methods for structuring an academic essay, learning to write effective thesis statements, controlling ideas and providing support for their claims.
6. Students will learn to collaborate through in-class discussions, debates and presentations.
7. Students will learn how to use the Internet and other digital technologies for academic writing and research. 

 

Principle of Management

Module Overview:

Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment, in which individuals working in groups efficiently accomplish the selected aims.
This subject will explore the theories and practice of management. It is a basic introduction to principles of management, managerial functions in all levels of organizations and how management applies in real world cases. 

Module Aims:

The course will consist of lectures, case studies, group presentation, and a final exam. Case studies will be scored according to the level of analysis and the quality of presentation. When possible, guest speakers will be invited to the class to give students an opportunity to ask questions about real-world marketing issues, and to learn about careers in marketing.

A group presentation is emphasized by having the students work as team members to solve problems and respond to the exercises - short exercises to develop integrative and critical thinking, Team-Based Exercises (TBE) to encourage students to work outside of formal class time and develop well researched and presented reports, and examination of Case Studies to assist students to integrate (sometimes conflicting) concepts discussed in the text and class.

In addition, students are exposed to a diversity of ideas about cultural values in different nations, and how those values influence management and organizational practices. The readings build upon students’ existing knowledge of the functioning of different business organizations, and help them develop an understanding of how organizations function in a wide variety of cultures.

 

Principle of Accounting

Module Overview:

This is a compulsory course of the Accounting series, designed for the 1st or 2nd year undergraduate students. The goal of principles of accounting course is to develop an understanding of, and skills to apply, appropriate principles of accounting strategies to prepare for the financial statements and better knowledge of being an accountant. Principles of accounting extends the governance framework covered in Ethics and Governance, further discusses the process of financial statements preparation and the entire accounting cycle.

Intermediate Language (Chinese/ English) 1

Module Overview:

This course is designed for those learners who have grasped at least 800 Chinese words and have mastered basic writing skills. Oral and written comprehension will be refined as well as oral expression through the study of grammar and vocabulary employed in different situations. More new vocabulary as well as some more complex sentence structures are introduced. Emphasis is placed on conversational skills, but written exercises are used to reinforce the oral component. Upon completion of the course, students are able to engage in daily conversations in areas of social and work related topics with relative ease.

To conduct intermediate integrated skills training of Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing and teach certain knowledge of the language and culture so that students can use Chinese freely.   

 

Organizational Behavior

Module Overview:

The study of organisational behaviour enables understanding and explanation of how and why people behave the way they do in organisations and what impact organisations have on people’s behaviour. This course will introduce a number of different theories, models and practices as applied to a variety of work contexts and encourage critical exploration of their usefulness in relation to organisational behaviour. It will provide you with the opportunity to apply theoretical content to your personal styles and behaviour and to combine these into a considered and practical approach.

Module Aims:

This course focuses on the managerial work and human challenge encountered in an organization. It provides a framework on understanding and analyzing behavior in an organizational context. It relates discussion on human perspectives, psychology and sociology and examines the organizational consequences of both individual and group behavior within a formal organization.   

 

Business Reporting

Module Overview:

NOTE: This module should not be confused with Research Methods. This module is an English language module that deals with language and format. The principle aim of this course is to develop and strengthen student knowledge of English reporting skills and to develop understanding of how to generate layout of text for formal academic purposes. Therefore, this module will focus on the information necessary to create a formal academic paper, namely a dissertation or thesis. The course follows a systematic approach, as shown below.

Principle of Microeconomics

Module Overview:

This module emphasises the use of economic concepts at the individual or business level and will facilitate to understand the choices people make that are related to the function of markets over the world. It will provide support for continuation and understanding of how the micro-level will have an impact on macroeconomics which is a holistic understanding of the international markets and governance in relation to politics.

Business Ethics and Corporate Responsibilities

Module Overview:

This module introduces the concept of ethics in business, the role of career in one’s life, ethical ways of performing various roles in a company, ways to structure companies to encourage ethical conduct, and the ethical foundations of capitalist business. We will use many real-life cases of businesses that have dealt with difficult ethical situations. Since GIME is an international institute, we will consider ethical cases and situations from both Eastern and Western countries. Everyone in business confronts difficult ethical decisions. The main goal of this unit is to prepare you to make those choices with full awareness of the consequences of your choices. One crucial part of this preparation will be to practice ethical reasoning: how to think critically about ethical choices and values.

The course activity goals are for the student to: read all materials assigned before class; come to class and actively participate and discuss the topic under consideration; and to think and write about what has been covered.

On successful completion of this module students will gain knowledge of the main concepts and theories on business ethics and will be able to demonstrate:
1. A good grasp of the foundations of ethical values.
2. An understanding of the role of work in life
3. Good understanding of the main concepts and theories of ethical leadership:
- Authentic leadership
- Leadership styles
- Servant leadership
4. Ability to apply concepts from philosophy, psychology, and economics to discussions of business ethics. 

Upon the successful completion of the course students will also acquire good understanding of the importance of codes of ethics and codes of conduct:
- The differences between code of ethics and code of conduct;
- The role of codes of ethics in business organizations;
- Whistleblowing when the norms of business ethics are breached.

Students will have good understanding of the functioning of multinational corporations vis-a-vis theories of human rights. Be able to employ ethical concepts in the evaluation of various business practices. Students will also acquire increased awareness of, and more confidence in, using learning, academic and communication / presentation skills. 

 

Human Resource Management

Module Overview:

Human Resource Management (HRM) is a key source of competitive advantage for organizations. This course will provide students with current real world and research-based knowledge in how to best select, train, evaluate, reward and develop employees, in order to help students develop the skills necessary to critically evaluate HR practices. Course topics are relevant for jobs both in HR and in all types of functional areas and organizations.

2. Enable students to appreciate the challenges involved in the management of people in the workplace.

Research Methods

Module Overview:

Students receive an overview of the scientific method, research preparation, and the styles of communication used to disseminate research at the graduate level. Topics include the role of business research, theory and the business research process, organization structure and ethical issues, defining a research problem, qualitative research tools, survey research, observation methods and experimental research, measurement and scaling concepts, sampling and sample size, working with data, quantitative statistical analysis, and writing a research report.

After completing this course, students should be able to: 

1. Explain how research contributes to business decisions and practices. 

2. Describe the role of theory in the business research process. 

3. Critically think about business research problems and various methods of approaching the problems. 

4. Discuss the ethical issues applicable to business research. 

5. Develop research questions and hypotheses, and incorporate them into a methodologically sound research proposal for the graduate thesis/project. 

6. Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research methods and the suitability of different methods of gathering data. 

7. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of survey research. 

8. Assess measurement and scaling options to determine appropriate measures required to address specific research questions. 

9. Apply proper sampling designs and procedures to business research. 

10. Transform data into information, and calculate and interpret basic descriptive statistics. 

11. Apply and interpret the different types of quantitative methods of analysis.

Strategic Management

Module Overview:

The module provides students with a theoretical and practical understanding of how strategic management is conducted and how corporate strategy can be formulated in the light of external and internal environmental conditions. The module equips students with a framework for understanding strategic management and corporate strategy as interdisciplinary activity within the context of competitive markets, leading to insights to corporate decision-making.

1) Provide students with an understanding of theoretical approaches to the formulation, selection, implementation and control of corporate strategy; 

2) Provide students with an understanding of how to apply theoretical concepts of corporate strategy to practical business settings; 

3) Provide students with the tools to critically understand strategic management through the methods, difficulties and limitations of formulating, implementing and controlling corporate strategy;
