Management

Module Overview:

Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment, in which individuals working in groups efficiently accomplish the selected aims. This subject will explore the theories and practice of management. It is a basic introduction to principles of management, managerial functions in all levels of organizations and how management applies in real world cases. 

Module Aims: 

This course aims to:

1. To provide an overview of the system approach model of management 

2. To identify the external environment in which the organizations operate 

3. To discuss the five managerial functions in practice as well as in theory 

4. To recognize the differences in managing in different countries or organizations 

5. To assist students to develop the ability to analyze related cases using the organized knowledge underlying the practice 

6. To enable students to adopt an innovative and international perspective as a manager 


Management Information System

Module Overview: 

This course focuses on the organizational and technical foundations of management information systems. It introduces the concepts of systems, IS, and IT and their applications in organizational context. Management of information, knowledge management, and systems development will be discussed to provide an understanding of the integration of IT into business processes. In this course IT is conceptualized as a business resource while IS as a business solution. 

Module Aims: 

This subject aims to further develop the students' understanding of the use, implications and potential of information systems in organizations. 


Econometrics 

Module Overview: 

This class offers an introduction to econometrical methodology with an emphasis on practical applications. The class includes cross section regression analysis including simple linear regression and multiple liner regression, hypothesis testing, nonlinear regressions, and binary dependent variable regression. This class will also teach how to use software such as Stata. The intent of this course is to provide the student with a foundation of basic analysis tools and prepare the student for understanding econometrical methods in the future. The emphasis in the course will be on the application of methods and interpretation of their results. This will be a fairly fast-paced class so I recommend that you make every effort to stay with or ahead of the material. 

Module Aims: 

The aims of this subject are: 

1. to provide students with a foundation of basic econometrical tools and prepare the students for advanced study in the future; 

2. to help students develop a solid theoretical background in introductory level econometrics; 

3. to help students develop the ability to implement the techniques of economics into application. 


Microeconomics 

Module Overview: 

This course begins with an introduction to supply and demand and the basic forces that determine an equilibrium in a market economy. Next, it introduces a framework for learning about consumer behavior and analyzing consumer decisions. We then turn our attention to firms and their decisions about optimal production, and the impact of different market structures on firms' behavior. The final section of the course provides an introduction to some of the more advanced topics that can be analyzed using microeconomic theory. These include international trade, the theory of consumer choice, asymmetric information, political economics and behavioral economics. 

Module Aims: 

The objective of this course is to provide you with the basic ability to handle economic theory in microeconomic language, to use mathematical and graphical techniques and analysis, to understand economic concepts, to understand the strategies of economic agents under different types of market structures(monopoly, oligopoly and a competitive market), to use economic tools to solve basic microeconomic problems, to use these techniques to think about a number of policy questions and analyze economic policies relevant to the operation of the real economy. 


Profile of China 

Module Overview: 

The course of Profile of China provides basic information of China, showing the students the outline of China. With the help of PPT and some videos, the teacher will illustrate and exemplify the inner world of Chinese people and their perspectives, so that the students will gain a deep understanding of China and Chinese people. The course is designed to offer students some information about the essence of China and Chinese culture. Besides, some functional information will be given. For example, the students will learn how to tell the differences of tea and how to appreciate traditional Chinese music and folk music, and so on. This is a course combining theoretical and practical things.

1. Help the students get some basic information about China and Chinese culture. 

2. Lay a solid foundation for the students to further study Chinese culture at a higher level. 

3. Open a window through which the students can gain a deeper understanding of the true essence of Chinese culture and Chinese society. 

4. Offer the students a better understanding of life and different perspective of the world. 

5. Give the students some practical skills to practice things. 


Basic Chinese 1

Module Overview: 

This course helps students to prepare the HSK level 1examination and focuses mainly on improving their Chinese proficiency level and strategies necessary for passing the test. The contents will cover an introduction of the HSK exam structure, HSK vocabulary lists, a variety of topics, as well as grammar points and structures according to the HSK test principles. 

Module Aims: 

This module aims to: 

1. Improve listening, reading, and writing level. 

2. Educate students test skills. 

3. Improve communication ability. 


Strategy Management

Module Overview: 

The module provides students with a theoretical and practical understanding of how strategic management is conducted and how corporate strategy can be formulated in the light of external and internal environmental conditions. The module equips students with a framework for understanding strategic management and corporate strategy as interdisciplinary activity within the context of competitive markets, leading to insights to corporate decision-making.  

Module Aims: 

This module aims to: 

1) Provide students with an understanding of theoretical approaches to the formulation, selection, implementation and control of corporate strategy; 

2) Provide students with an understanding of how to apply theoretical concepts of corporate strategy to practical business settings; 

3) Provide students with the tools to critically understand strategic management through the methods, difficulties and limitations of formulating, implementing and controlling corporate strategy; 

4) Provide students with an appreciation for the importance and contribution of strategic management to organizational success. 


Research Method 

Module Overview: 

Students receive an overview of the scientific method, research preparation, and the styles of communication used to disseminate research at the graduate level. Topics include the role of business research, theory and the business research process, organization structure and ethical issues, defining a research problem, qualitative research tools, survey research, observation methods and experimental research, measurement and scaling concepts, sampling and sample size, working with data, quantitative statistical analysis, and writing a research report. 

Module Aims: 

After completing this course, students should be able to: 

1. Explain how research contributes to business decisions and practices. 

2. Describe the role of theory in the business research process. 

3. Critically think about business research problems and various methods of approaching the problems. 

4. Discuss the ethical issues applicable to business research. 

5. Develop research questions and hypotheses, and incorporate them into a methodologically sound research proposal for the graduate thesis/project. 

6. Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research methods and the suitability of different methods of gathering data. 

7. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of survey research. 

8. Assess measurement and scaling options to determine appropriate measures required to address specific research questions. 

9. Apply proper sampling designs and procedures to business research. 

10. Transform data into information, and calculate and interpret basic descriptive statistics. 

11. Apply and interpret the different types of quantitative methods of analysis. 

12. Effectively communicate research in a written report and presentation. 


Organizational Behavior

Module Overview: 

The study of organisational behaviour enables understanding and explanation of how and why people behave the way they do in organisations and what impact organisations have on people’s behaviour. This course will introduce a number of different theories, models and practices as applied to a variety of work contexts and encourage critical exploration of their usefulness in relation to organisational behaviour. It will provide you with the opportunity to apply theoretical content to your personal styles and behaviour and to combine these into a considered and practical approach. 

Module Aims: 

This course focuses on the managerial work and human challenge encountered in an organization. It provides a framework on understanding and analyzing behavior in an organizational context. It relates discussion on human perspectives, psychology and sociology and examines the organizational consequences of both individual and group behavior within a formal organization. 


Basic Chinese 2

Module Overview: 

This course helps students to prepare the HSK level 2examination and focuses mainly on improving their Chinese proficiency level and strategies necessary for passing the test. Business Reporting

Module Overview: 

Business Reporting is designed to help students write on business-related topics for both an academic and professional context. In the academic context, students will learn the skills necessary for writing essays and a thesis expected of them in business-related majors. In the professional context, students will learn the fundamental elements and skills in writing professional business reports, memos, and other communications. 

Module Aims: 

1. Students will gain the skills necessary to writing academic essays and a thesis on business-related topics, including but not limited to the following: paraphrasing, summarizing, developing strong arguments, reading and research strategies, in-text citations and works cited pages. 

2. Students will build powerful critical and structural thinking skills. 

3. Students will develop the ability to proofread, edit and polish their own work, as well as make constructive suggestions to peer student writers. 

4. Students will acquire skills necessary in writing full-length business reports, including executive summaries and making recommendations. 

5. Students will enhance their ability to write memos, resumés and other business-related communications. 


Human Resource Management 

Module Overview:

Issues in Human Resource Management (IHRM) course intends to build upon the existing knowledge of the students in this field and expand it to current and global issues in human resources management that affect company performances. This course will provide students with current real world and research-based knowledge in order to critically evaluate HR practices. 

Module Aims: 

The objective of the course is to help students develop an understanding for and solve complex human resources management issues faced by organizations today. 


Elementary Chinese

Module Overview: 

This course focuses on improving their communication ability in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives and helps students to prepare the HSK level 3examination. For this level, only Chinese character is given, without pinyin. The contents will cover an introduction of the HSK exam structure (listening, reading and writing are tested), HSK vocabulary lists, a variety of topics, as well as grammar points and structures according to the HSK test principles. 

Module Aims:

1. Improve listening, reading, and writing level. 

2. Educate students test skills. 

3. Improve communication ability. 

4. Increase students’ vocabulary.
